Hippocrates, born on the Greek island of Kos (460BC), was a physician and teacher who exercised a permanent influence on the development of medicine. He was the first to believe that diseases have a natural cause and treatment. His ideals and ethics, expressed in the Hippocratic Oath, have inspired physicians ever since.
